Arlen Specter - resolute maverick or compliant pet?

I can't put my finger on exactly why this is the case, but there is something about this photograph -- showing Arlen Specter standing and grinning at George Bush's side yesterday at the White House ceremony when Bush signed the renewed Patriot Act into law -- that speaks volumes about whether it is rational to place one's hopes for a meaningful Congressional investigation into the NSA scandal on the shoulders of Arlen Specter:

As usual, the Leader is adorned with glorious Orwellian imagery - the "Protecting the Homeland" slogan embedded into the American flag. But the true revelation in the photograph, for me at least, is Specter. While we ought to press ahead with as much pressure and encouragement as possible directed towards Specter to follow through on his commitments to have the Judiciary Committee investigate the NSA scandal further, there's just something about this photograph that seems significant to me, and less than encouraging.

The expressions on the Joy Brothers' faces is quite...interesting. They look like they just ran out from behind the Shed.

  2. In the spirit of your "I'm not sure why," my reaction to Specter's face was, "He's a schnook."

That is a word I remember from childhood. I don't even know whether it's a real Yiddish word, and I couldn't define it, but that's what I think about the Senator from Pennsylvania.

    Addendum:

    I found a definition at http://www.bartleby.com/61/90/S0139000.html

(Slang) A stupid or easily victimized person; a dupe.

ETYMOLOGY: Yiddish shnuk, snout, schnook, from Lithuanian snukis, mug, snout.

Right, that is pretty much what I mean. Specter is happy when somebody important thinks he is a good boy. He says and does whatever is necessary for that to happen. Often he likes to appear smart. In this photo you can see that he has done really, really well at his Bar Mitzvah.

This AS(s) owes his seat in the Senate to GW. Check his last primary run.

BAGnews oughtta weight in on this. But I'll just say that I find the positioning of Specter's hands interesting, giving his grin of boyish excitement. Is he -hiding- somthing?

Look at Bush. He's so tiny. This photo makes him look like a little kid sitting at a school desk.

Yes, what billb said. He is a keystone to the supports of the lone gunman killing Kennedy and the official disgracing of any other explanation. He's been an effective persecutor of civil liberties and freedom of information, a very good partner to the autocrats.

They are intently observing whether the Glorious Leader can actually sign his name.

There will be no more witnesses before the Judiciary Committee after this second Gonzales appearance. There may be wrangling over some meaningless "oversight" legislation, but there will be no more facts uncovered about the ongoing illegal surveillance.

That will be the end of the Republican Congress's "investigation" into admitted violations of FISA by the president.

So far as I can tell, this executive lawbreaking is barely mentioned in major press outlets any more; not that I really blame them, as they ae not backed up by the Congress when executive misdeeds are reported, and are viciously threatened by the executive branch to boot. Hence, info-tainment will continue to be the order of the day.

As Glenn has said, our government is broken. No one in it cares enough to repair it, and the people clearly do not think it needs to be fixed.

He looks flushed and giddy. Observing him in action on C-Span, he always seems so monotone and lifeless. To see him looking like this gives me an eerie feeling, particularly in the company he stands with. Is he so excited to pass the bill or is he simply basking in the light of the Exalted One? I agree, this picture disolves any hope I had of Arlen taking a strong stance against the spy program.

Right about Specter. The one seated is a "putz."

Leopards do not change their spots. Why do people keep assuming they will?

People act consistently in their lives. Moral people act morally, and immoral people act immorally.

As Specter has done nothing thus far to indicate he is a man of character, why expect that he will?

    Don't trust, so verify.

Too bad, AL, but the right wins the “photo fun” contest today, hands down. For ease of appreciation, go to
    Michelle Malkin’ site.
She has the Reuters editorial policy, the link to see the original Reuters photo and the link to Wazzadem’s photo for the humorous part..
For those whose computers just cannot go to a right wing site like Malkin’s, the Reuters photo is here. The Reuters policy is:
”...We do not take sides and attempt to reflect in our stories, pictures and video the views of all sides. We are not in the business of glorifying one side or another or of disseminating propaganda. Reuters journalists do not offer their own opinions or views.”
And the Wuzzadem photo is here.
Two incidental notes: 1) File this comment in “There is no liberal bias in the MSM” file; and 2) Just who is that fat guy on the right in the AL photo and why is his appearance not equally amusing in the photo? Is his appearance at this signing equally as discouraging as Senator Specter’s? If not, why not?

Oh, I forgot. Props to AL for not cropping the photo to eliminate the fat guy. Guys, you've got to get the photoshop folks on the ball here. This one was a no-brainer.

  16. I'd like to know -- given the committee decision to not look into the matter over the NSA unlaful activity -- why the Ranking Member isn't directing the NSA IG to review the matter -- the discuss the results. It's allowed.

I'm amazed at the contrast between the UAE and NSA issues: Same core values -- oversight, statutes, and procedures -- but the Congress says they're "really concerned" about the UAE, but nothing on NSA.

Why aren't we revoking the powers they're abusing?

  17. Hey ... the MAGIC BULLET theory ? Don't knock it. May defy the laws of physics but it gave an explanation that that guy on the right hand side of the picture has never argued with.

  18. I just watched a bit of video, and Specter was the first hand Bush shook when he was done.

The reason is Constant that the ports deal doesn't threaten Bush with impeachment. I suspect that if all the facts were known that the NSA spy program does.

  20. PRAWN, the Philadelphia Regional Anti-War Network, along with the NW Greens and whoever else is in the mood to join us, has carried out three picketings of Specter's house (Actually about 50-100 yards away, we're more interested in waving our signs at the passing traffic than we are in blocking access to his house.)
    Details are posted at http://www.prawnworks.net/
and we're holding our fourth one on the 19th of this month.
    Hope to see y'all there!

Arlen Specter is a traitor to this country. He wants to hand over our immigration and border policies to Mexico. The entire senate is made up of traitorous scum, and we need to loosen the control of these fat cats by voting in strong 3rd party candidates who actually represent us.
