Midge Decter: The Mother Sheehan of the Right

A couple of months ago, a Daily Kos diarist wrote a post urging his fellow anti-war activists to refer to Cindy Sheehan only with the creepy, cult-like title of "Mother Sheehan." His reasoning was almost as disturbing as the suggestion itself:

She is not a person now, she is a mother, which is not an expression of her individuality, but rather the expression of her eternal character: the mother, the bringer of life who has been wronged by state power.

Unsurprisingly, this post was the source of much derision on the Right, where she is still invariably referred to by that title.

It seems, though, that trying to bestow onto a political figure some sainted Mother image is ridiculous and funny only when someone on the Left does it. When the Right does it, it is profoundly moving and insightful.

Bruce Kesler over at Democracy Project has written a Thanksgiving love letter to neoconservative mistress Midge Decter, entitled "Thanksgiving for Midge Decter: Thanks Mom." Kesler shows that he is quite serious about considering Midge his mother, and really lays on the motherhood dribble much thicker than anyone ever did for Mother Sheehan:

Unbeknownst to Midge Decter, until last year, although having children of her own to raise, she has been my spiritual mother since I was 20. Midge Decter’s writings, on the nexus of culture and politics, the guide of the values we have at home to those we practice in the world, are rooted in the life experiences and concerns of a Jewish mother for the survival and success of her family. America is Midge Decter’s extended family. . . .

It was then, through a mutual friend I was graced to meet during the campaign, that I sent Midge Decter an email about her quote from 1968 and its effect on my life. She responded, overgraciously, but only as a proud mother can, that my contribution saved the country. A son was never prouder. . . .

Midge Decter felt responsible for what had happened to America, as only a mother can . . .

In May 2004, Midge Decter updated her maternal reflections . . .

This mother of sense, mine for almost 40-years, now extends her apron of motherly blessing and lessons to the next generation of America’s defenders. Just as those who served extend our faith, solidarity and hands to them.

With Midge Decter as their spiritual mother, a latter day lady of liberty, how can they go wrong! Thanks Mom.

Really, this borders on the disturbed. At least the Kos diarist wanted to use the "Mother Sheehan" title as a symbol. Kesler appears to have really come to think of Decter as his mom.

And what does the Right think of this emotionally twisted transformation of a political activist into a symbol of surrogate Motherhood? They must be mocking and scorning it the way they did when the Daily Kos diarist did the same thing to Cindy Sheehan, right?

Uh, no. They are celebrating and even drippily expounding upon Kesler's love note, and are recommending it to all.

I am sure that Mother Decter is very proud to have so many adoring, grateful little neocon boys who are appropriately appreciative of everything their mother did for them. What Mother wouldn't be?

OK, Bruce Kesler needs to see a doctor and quick. Having a fantasy life for 20 years where someone is your secret mother is a true sign of being emotionally disturbed.

Do you think they consider John Podhoretz their brother? Now that is just gross.

These little neocons are like little boys in search of their mommy, so this is hardly a surprise.

Funny. Never heard of Midge. Perchance I should ridicule her as well. Tell you what, when she gets 24 by 7 media coverage, visits from the race peddlers (Sharpton and Jackson), and camps out near the president's land demanding he make one on one time for her, I'll get her her own sandwich, mm'kay?

Midge Dector has had infinitely more influence on American politics than Cindy Sheehan even could dream of having. Aside from the fact that she's the wife of Norman Podhoretz (the father of the NeoConservative movement) and the mother of NY Post Editor John Podhoretz (and, apparently, the imaginary mommy of countless neocon bloggers as well), she has spawned one neonconservative tract after the next over the last several decades which have shaped and molded all the nice people who brought us, among other things, the war in Iraq.

And the post wasn't about Midge. It was about her pretend sons.

"have shaped and molded all the nice people who brought us, among other things, the war in Iraq."

You mean she molded all those democrats who voted for it?

Damn, maybe I *should* get working on that sandwich.

Exactly, because we know that without a single Democratic vote it would still have passed

Ahh then, we'll just give them a pass then. It's not like they didn't know back then what they're claiming to know now. Might have even prevented the war had they been 'patriotic and dissented'.

But you're right. If I were trolling I could do much better. For instance, I could (anonymously) call an entire swath of the population who I don't know Mother Fuckers. That might be a good start. What do you think?

Anyway, now that I've a few more minutes, I'll respond to Glenn.

    First off, you say
And the post wasn't about Midge. It was about her pretend sons.
You use the plural sons although I see only one article by a single fellow claiming that position.

Second, those of us who poked fun at Mother Sheehan did so not because people considered her their mother, but that so many people considered her status of being a mother as somehow bestowing her absolute moral authority and, for all intents and purposes, some sort of weird sainthood. The term Mother Sheehan was ridiculed as if she was being referred to similarly as 'Mother Superior' and not 'mommy'.

Here, you have Decter who by Glenn's own words is someone whose ideas have inspired people, for better or worse, in their politics and withstood the test of time (Expect a VH1 Behind the Moonbattery episode on Sheehan next Fall). Finding her to be a mother figure, albeit a wee bit creepy when taken to the extent of Keseler, just doesn't strike me as nutyt as Cindy being elevated to prime time news status.

Bruce Kesler called Midge his mom and himself her son, and then like-minded people revealed themselves as sharing his sentiments.

Second, those of us who poked fun at Mother Sheehan did so not because people considered her their mother, but that so many people considered her status of being a mother as somehow bestowing her absolute moral authority and, for all intents and purposes, some sort of weird sainthood.

Nobody thought she deserved sainthood. People thought she viscerally illustrated a human cost of the war - namely, that lots of young soldiers come home in coffins and the lives of their families are devestated, a cost which many believe -- thanks to news blackouts on photograping coffins and a willingness to diminish that sacrifice by those who don't have to make it -- is under-appreciated.

Cindy Sheehan forced attention to be paid to that aspect of the war in a visceral and unavoidable way, and for that reason, was a news story.

Finding her to be a mother figure, albeit a wee bit creepy when taken to the extent of Keseler, just doesn't strike me as nutyt as Cindy being elevated to prime time news status.

Yes, of cousre you think that the Right Wing transformation of Midge Decter into Mother Decter isn't as disturbing, and is more justifiable, than the identical transformation of Cindy Sheehan by one lone Kos diarist on the Left. That's becasue you agree with those doing it to Decter but disagree those doing it to Sheehan, which is how you are able to find the identical act worse when the other side does it than when your side does it.

And it precisely that form of naked intellectual dishonesty that makes political discussion so depressingly worthless and dumb.

Glenn, in a very real way, Cindy has taken on mythic proportions - for both sides of the debate (I use the word loosely - to paraphrase you, naked intellectual dishonesty is not debate).

All the major players in this tragedy carry mythic overtones. There are no new stories, after all.

Anyway, I loved the dishonesty line. It will always be the left's signature strength, and at the same time it's fatal flaw, that we believe in reason. The radical right (I refuse to call them conservatives) does not even pretend to tie their beliefs to any objective vision of the truth. As McCain's Chief of Staff said of Grover Norquist,

"In Norquist's world, the truth is for suckers. And it's as pointless to respond to him as it would be to respond to some street-corner schizophrenic," Salter responded.
